Scotland delays the introduction of DRS
Following on from its announcement that the Scottish DRS (Deposit Return Scheme) will be implemented in April 2021, the COVID 19 outbreak seems to have put brakes on it.
In 2019 Scotland set out its proposals to the DRS. A Scheme that would include an ‘all-in’ model covering PET plastic drinks bottles, aluminium and steel cans and glass bottles – with a deposit level set at 20p. However on March 16th 2020 Scotland’s environment secretary, Roseanna Cunningham announced that the initiative will now be put on hold, with a ‘go-live’ date of 1 July 2022.
Ms Cunningham said this would “give retailers and producers time to prepare for a successful scheme from day one”, while also allowing flexibility in light of the coronavirus outbreak.
“Having listened to the views of stakeholders, I have agreed to extend the ‘go-live’ date from April 2021 to July 2022,” she said.
Ms Cunnigham added: “This will give businesses more time to prepare their premises for the scheme and crucially, provides flexibility in the immediate term as the whole country prepares to deal with Covid-19 – the impact of which continues to be closely monitored.”

Though delayed, the Deposit Return Scheme is still coming. We believe that reverse vending machines will be as commonplace as regular vending machines in public places. Recyclever is the only RVM to be manufactured here in the UK and promises a wealth of opportunities for the retailer. Do you want to be one of the first? Get in touch with our friendly team today.
The Solution
recyclever® provides an ideal solution for brands that want to ensure they are responsibly recycling their packaging. Reverse vending can helping FMCG businesses to support the circular economy where more of our waste is recycled and reused instead of sent to landfill or left to damage and pollute our environment.
Branded recyclever® machines provide a mechanism to offer consumers to return a specific range of containers in return for a reward. The waste is then sent to a reliable recycling outlet or back to the manufacturer for re-use.
