The Scottish Government Plan to Introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)
With a Deposit Return Scheme, the price you pay for a product included in the scheme will include a small charge ‘the deposit’ which is given back when the item is returned to a specific point.
So, when someone buys a drink in a plastic bottle or aluminium can, they can get some of the cost back when they return the empty container to deposit return point.
From 27th June to 25th September 2018, the Scottish Government ran a consultation, A deposit return scheme for Scotland to gain views on which options will deliver the best results.
The deposit return scheme aims to:
- increase the quantity of target materials captured for recycling
- improve the quality of material captured, to allow for high-value recycling
- encourage wider behaviour changes in the uses of materials
- deliver the maximum economic and social benefit for Scotland
